Gordon Smith, for the past 20 years, has been an academic. Gordon has taught both at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and the University of Lethbridge. Gordon was a very innovative instructor. He has won both, the Instructor of Excellence Award, a student-driven award, and the prestigious Faculty Emeritus Award, awarded by the Board of Governors of Nait. Because of Gordon’s innovative approach and engaging personality, he has been a popular speaker for businesses, industries, academic groups, and schools.

Gordon is civic-minded. He has received a number of awards and citations within the Edmonton community. He has received the Citizen of the Year Award, Canadian 125 Commemorative Award, the Canadian Legion Anniversary Medal, the Canadian Boy Scouts Fellowship Award. Gordon has served Junior Achievement, Services for the Handicapped Committees, The Canadian Legion, the Rick Hanson Wheels in Motion Foundation, The Canadian Armed Forces Reserve, and on many other civic committees. Gordon established his own charity and collects over 50,000 socks, mitts and toques for the homeless downtrodden people of the inner city in Edmonton annually.

Gordon is the recipient of four university degrees. He is a cancer survivor of 20 years and he accomplished these milestones while operating from a wheelchair. He is handicapped as a result of biopsy and radiation treatments. Gordon has been confined to a wheelchair for the past 20 years and he has no ambulatory functions. Gordon acts as a spokesman for the Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Foundation and the Canadian Paraplegic Foundation.

Gordon often speaks to audiences about Overcoming Adversity. He has led an exemplary life in surmounting obstacles and living life to the fullest.
