The Inter-Generational Workplace

Kristen Cumming Photo

Kristen Cumming's life work is focused on improving the connection between people and their work. Her twenty years of experience in career development and human resources is complemented by a passion for demography.

Kristen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Master of Education degree in Workplace and Adult Learning. Kristen is an instructor with the Bachelor of Management Business Economics Program at the University of Alberta – Augustana Campus and operates a successful consulting practice through which she serves as a speaker, facilitator and trainer on The Inter-Generational Workplace, recruitment and retention, leadership and execution.

Demography is a powerful tool to explore workforce trends due to its relative stability and predictability. Kristen, in her presentation, The Inter-Generational Workplace, presents a series of generation/population profiles that reflect the communities represented in the workplace and explores the quantitative information including their communication styles, regional labour supply and demand, and relative employment rate for each group. The fun part is in the qualitative exploration, discussing the differences in characteristics, values and learning patterns of each generation. This is most powerful with a significant amount of audience participation, and works very nicely in both large and medium scale presentations.

Reflecting upon audience feedback from the past – the strength that Kristen offers is the ability to weave together the quantitative and qualitative values of these generational groups and she provides a strong learning platform for diverse workplaces.  She delivers tools on how to deal with each group: The Boomers, Gen Xers, Gen Ys, and the Millennials (Gen Z).

Kristen presents with a great deal of energy, passion and humour.

Kristen's exploration of the North American demographic landscape is focused on real stories of the shared experiences within the social and economic context of each generation. This landscape is shaped by technological, economic and social trends that surface through the course of the talk quite readily.

"The presenter of multigenerational workforce did a great job of showing us how "why generation" thinks and does things.  I was amazed. "

The relevance, the honesty, the intelligence, the humour.  The insight into today's youth and today's market. The light bulb that went on as I listened."

"A sense of reasoning behind generational behaviours. Thank you."
