Topics: Yes, I Really Was a Cowgirl

Location: Wetaskiwin, Alberta

Reputation: Alberta

Nancy Christenson has always looked for adventure in life. In early adulthood, back in the ’70s, she dropped out of university and decided to seek a general education in the varied experiences that life had to offer. In between working at an odd collection of jobs, she flew a hang-glider, hitchhiked through California, and ski-toured the Rockies.

But her richest and most unique experience came when she took a camp-cook job on Canada’s largest cattle ranch. In her four years there, as she explains with a laugh, “I was converted from hippie to cowgirl.”

Nancy came to love the leisurely pace of rural living and its down-to earth people, all richly conveyed in the book she has published about her experiences there: Yes, I Really Was a Cowgirl.

A songwriter and a poet, Nancy’s real gift is storytelling, whatever the medium she chooses. Her transparency draws her audience in, and her songs and poems will elicit both laughter and tears. While she loves to simply entertain, she also likes to draw deeper messages out of her experiences. Her stories have many applications, and she will tailor her presentation to meet the needs of any group.

Some of her other works include: Cookhouse Capers, a CD of poetry from her “cowgirl life”; a series of inspirational booklets called Life Lessons; The Prince of Ôwr, an allegory; and currently in the publishing process, the story of her marriage: Made in Heaven, Fleshed Out on Earth.

Here are some comments from people who have heard her speak:

  • “It was wonderful because Nancy spoke to my heart and spirit . . .”
  • “Peaceful ending for a conference. I wasn’t stressed out after the conference.”
  • “Very interesting and hopeful. Bring her back!”
  • “Thank you for an opportunity to feel. The stories were fabulous and poetry was creative and humorous. . . . The speaker allowed her vulnerability to shine and this allowed me to connect. It’s helped me, as an individual.”
