After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Master of Arts in Education, John dedicated twenty-nine years to the college systems in Alberta and British Columbia. He has been a Communications Instructor, a Dean, a Director, an Associate Vice-President, and Academic Vice-President at Lakeland College and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. While at SAIT he earned a Manager of the Year Award.

Following retirement from the college system, John joined the Railway Association of Canada as the creator and Director of the Institute of Railway Technology, a new approach to training for Canada's railway industry. In this capacity John travelled extensively across Canada making presentations to conferences, transportation industry associations, safety groups, and educators.  He now teaches part-time at Lethbridge College.

John's achievements in public speaking are notable. He began at the University of Calgary where he won the President's Debating Award. He won many more speaking awards during six years of active membership in Toastmasters International. While at SAIT, John was selected several times to be the Master of Ceremonies for the Heritage Hall Banquets, prestigious annual business and industry fundraising dinners. He has also been the graduation Master of Ceremonies for two colleges. John has extensive experience making presentations and facilitating workshops on strategic planning, team building, writing policies and procedures, thinking skills, and inspiration. His choice use of humour makes him an entertaining speaker. He poignantly uses it effectively to educate and inspire his audiences everywhere.

For several years John has served as the Lethbridge Director for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Run for the Cure. He also volunteers as a Trustee of the Lethbridge Public Library. Above all, John is life-long learner. He believes in literacy, reading and inquisition. John is a keen observer of life, and as he states: "A probing mind will keep you awake, aware and alive."
