Most of us believe we work for good organizations. Most of us believe we are doing good things for customers, communities, the environment, and shareholders. Yet time and time again we hear the news stories about companies, governments, and individuals getting themselves in trouble. Why do good people and good organizations do bad things? What is needed to improve the moral climate of business? How do we achieve a constant presence that reminds us to “do the right thing”? How do we ensure we exercise uncompromising trust, integrity and responsibility?
In his presentation Sterling Eddy will address the many facets of the ethics debate including such questions as: What constitutes ethics? What is ethical leadership and culture? How do we deal with ethical challenges and dilemmas? Why do we need ethics? How does courage and character make possible other virtues like honesty and integrity? How do we know if we are being ethical? What is the role of conscience and ego in ethical behaviour? How does ethics fit with strategy and decision making?
Sterling’s view is that there is only ethics. Ethics cannot be divided into compartments like medical, accounting, professional, business ethics and so on. Can we be unethical in personal financial matters but ethical as the manager of a business or non-profit? Can a corporate executive be a cad in a family matter but a paragon of virtue at work? No, there’s only ethics!!!
Expect a stimulating session on a most interesting topic that will engage you to consider your ethics from both your personal and career experiences.
